The Need for Students to Focus on Their Textbooks in the Present Era
A Message to Students, Parents, and Teachers
I would like to express my views on the importance of studying textbooks carefully, especially for students who want to score high marks in their examinations.
In today's educational environment, one of the biggest challenges teachers face is students' lack of attention in the classroom. Many students sit in class absentmindedly and do not listen carefully to what their teachers teach. As a result, teachers find it difficult to provide proper knowledge and understanding to all students.
Teachers make every effort to keep students attentive and interested in their lessons. However, much of their effort goes to waste when students are unwilling to concentrate. Only a few students listen carefully and actively participate in classroom activities.
Many students today want only short summaries and a limited number of questions and answers. They often avoid reading their chapters thoroughly and do not try to understand the text in depth. They focus more on preparing ready-made answers than on gaining real knowledge.
Another serious problem is the lack of a proper timetable for self-study. Many students do not follow a regular study routine. Unfortunately, some parents also fail to understand the importance of self-study and time management. They feel proud when their children remain busy with tuition classes, even when they hardly find time to eat their meals properly or take adequate rest.
Teachers try to motivate students through advice, encouragement, and inspiring talks. However, these efforts often fail to bring lasting change. Many students lack the patience to read their chapters carefully, explore their topics, and develop a deeper understanding of their subjects.
As a result, teachers are sometimes compelled to focus primarily on producing good examination results. Although such results may appear impressive, they do not always reflect the quality of students' knowledge, understanding, and learning.
A simple question often reveals the problem: Ask students what their teachers taught them in class.
Many students struggle to recall even the basic points of the lesson. This raises an important question: What is the real purpose of education if students cannot remember or apply what they have learned?
What Should Teachers Do in Such a Situation?
This is a serious question that deserves thoughtful consideration. Teachers cannot achieve meaningful educational results through their efforts alone. Students must also develop a sense of responsibility, discipline, and interest in learning. Parents, too, have an important role to play in creating a healthy learning environment at home.
Teachers should therefore try to:
1. Encourage students to read their textbooks carefully, rather than depending only on summaries.
2. Develop students' interest through discussions, examples, and practical activities.
3. Give importance to understanding instead of rote learning.
4. Encourage students to follow a regular timetable for self-study.
5. Maintain communication with parents about their children's learning habits.
6. Help students understand that good marks are valuable, but genuine knowledge and skills are equally important.
Conclusion
Education is not simply about passing examinations or obtaining high marks. It is about developing knowledge, understanding, confidence, and the ability to think independently.
Students must understand that teachers can guide them, but they must take responsibility for their own learning. Parents and teachers should work together to develop disciplined, curious, and responsible learners.
The real success of education lies not only in the marks students obtain but also in the knowledge they retain and the way they use it in their lives.
